Possible "quickfix" for trading
I'm really sick of all these WTBs/WTSs in Local chat making it impossible to find people to party with or just to chat. While a trading system involving private shops or "auction house" might be nice in the longer term, perhaps there's something they can do a little more easily. Auto-filtering WTB to $trade, as has been discussed before, simply will not work and will only serve to make trade spammers messages become more annoyingly formatted.
My suggestion:
What if $trade were to be global for whatever region you're in? Sure, it would scroll fast, but that doesn't bother the traders in Droknar's Forge International 1 using local. For example, as long as you're in Lion's Arch American X (any American district), your trade line -- if you type it in $trade -- will be displayed in all American districts. From there, you could whisper each other to agree on a district to meet in to complete the trade. People would then have a strong incentive to use $trade over Local.
I'm not sure how that would affect server resources to send that much chat text, but it might be at least partially offset by lowering the number of district hops people make just to type their buying/selling lines. Hops would only need to happen when a transaction is being made.
